The More You Know - A Look At Metalin' Guitars

Metalin’ Guitars based out of St. James, MO, made their debut at this year’s Tritone Expo, and were definitely one of the companies that stood out to me as I hastily inspected all of the hand built gear from booth to booth. I had hoped to get back to their booth before the end of the show and really spend some time with the guitars, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. I recently caught up with Metalin’ and they were nice enough to send over a few pieces for me to review. Using aluminum as a material for instruments isn’t a new idea. The concept goes all the way back to The Aluminum Musical Instrument Company at the turn of the...

The More You Know - Local Pedal Builder Colin Croy and His Company CroyTone

A few years back I was at a show and happened to run into Evan Sult of the local band Sleepy Kitty. We hung for a bit and during our conversation he mentioned that he was taking over as editor for Eleven Magazine. Eleven was a free, monthly publication dedicated to local and traveling bands, album releases, and music related items. During our conversation he mentioned his plan to call on local musicians to write for the magazine, and asked  if I would be interested in having my own column in Eleven. He saw it as a guitar based column and basically said I could write about whatever I want. Of course I jumped at the opportunity! After some contemplation...

The More You Know - Pedal Steel Guitar - A Primer For Guitarists

I remember the first time I got to really see a pedal steel in action. My band Caution Horse was opening for Wilco at Mississippi Nights, and they were touring with guest steeler, Bob Egan of Blue Rodeo. Bob's rig was stage left and because we were the opener, we were set up in front of their gear, I also being set up stage left. I remember barely having room to move between the monitors in front and the steel behind me, but I'll never forget it. An old looking, brown Sho-Bud pedal steel. I was totally hypnotized! Watching Bob play was like watching a veteran truck driver navigate a rig through the winding hills of the smokey mountains. So...

There are so many guitarists in the world with their own unique style or take on the instrument, you would think we have pulled everything there is to be played from the guitar by now. And those unique styles are what separate us as players. What give us are own stamp. That is why, hardly any of us could ever answer the question, "Who is the best guitar player, ever?". So many different styles. So many individual takes on the instrument. How could anyone ever pick a best? But, there are a few guitarists that fall in a category above everyone else, an elite breed of player. Guitarists that are world recognized names that everyone, players and non players alike...

The More You Know - A Visit With Chicago Music Exchange

I will never forget the experience of making the rounds at the local music stores when I was young. I grew up in the country, in southern Illinois, and the nearest music store was a 30 minute drive away. You could take the day and hit four or five stores on a Saturday, if you didn't mess around, which we used to do almost religiously during my high school years.  You have to remember, this is before the internet. The only way to check out  gear was to physically walk into a store and actually check it out! Now days, I sit at the table while my coffee is brewing and check out the latest posts on Craigslist, Reverb, and a...
